Evaluation of Continuity Sequence

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene is literally what you see on screen. i thought that we used mise-en-scene well as we thought strongly about what we put in frame and in the final product. We thought about what made sense and what didn't, so we took all of the unnecessary things such as things in the background out as this could have been a distraction from the main focus of the shot. However, i feel like we could have used this better by planning it out more in depth as we had some distractions in some of the frames. For example, you can see in this screenshot of the last shot you can see me and Charlie. we should have edited us out or done a closer shot so we are not in frame.

Lighting

The lighting is self explanatory, it is simply the type of lighting you use in a scene or shot to create an atmosphere or simply to make things visible. I think that our lighting was hard to mess up as it was so simple. We decided to put the video in black and white because of the theme, this didn't require any special lighting equipment, just the ambient lighting given to us.

High or Low Camera Angles

High or low camera angles are the angle in which you film a shot. We didn't use any high or low camera angles as we wanted to keep it simple, our film was very story driven. I feel like we could have used different camera angles to create effects and communicate a shot in more depth.

Different Shot Distances

Shot distances are the distances you stand away from the main focal point of a scene or shot. We used a few different shot distances in our film. For example, we use a long shot to communicate how lonely our character is. This creates a lonely atmosphere.

Camera Movement

Camera movement is self explanatory, it is simply the kind of movement the camera does in a shot. We didn't have many special camera movement in our film. we had a small continuous shot which the camera followed the me from a standing position to a kneeling position. We also had another small continuous shot after i trip Charlie over, I run to help her up and then the camera moves over so you can see whats in the box.

The Continuity System:

- 180 degree rule
There wasn't much communication between characters in our film. but we stuck with the rule when 2 guys walk by and give our main character a dirty look. we st the camera up behind their left shoulder so when they turn around it looks like they are looking at me from my point of view.

- Match Cuts and Actions
Our match cuts and actions were okay for the most part, there were only a few that were a little bit rough but they were okay for the most part. we could have improved this by taking multiple shots of the same scene.

- Eye Line Match Cuts
Our eye line match cuts were also good as we had a shoulder mount to help us with steadiness and the height of the angle.

- POV Shots
We only had 2 simple POV shots in our film and i think they both went well. There wasn't much room for error in our POV shots so they came out good, but i think that we could have taken multiple shots just in case there was a better on we could have used in our final product.

- Shot-Reverse Shot
This was probably the most noticeable continuity error we made in our film. I dont know how we missed this, but in our very last scene we reversed the footage to make the heart link perfectly. But in the background there is car that past when we shot it, so in a final scene there is a car reversing down the street very fast. We could have easily avoided this by watching and checking through our footage, this was a simple yet silly mistake

To conclude, i have learnt that you definitely need to check through your footage to ensure that there are no errors and it makes sense. Also, i have learnt that you need to shoot multiple of the same shot so you can decide which one looks better and you have a verity to choose from. I enjoyed the whole process of creating this short film, from planning to editing the final product. It has taught me team building and helped me develop skills i didn't know i had.
